When a patient has severe neck pain, surgery may be offered.  Newer technology has allowed the selection of an artificial disc in the neck (cervical spine) instead of a fusion.  These have been shown to be as good, if not better than cervical fusion in terms of long-term outcome and repeat surgery.

Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement

What is it?

- Discs in the neck (cervical spine) can degenerate due to age, repetitive injury, or trauma.  This can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling.

 

How are they placed?

- Similar to a fusion, they are placed through a small incision on one side of the neck in the operating room.

- The disc is totally removed and the prosthesis is placed, replacing the disc in the space.

 

Does it work?

- The discs are designed to closely mimic the natural movements of the neck

 

Is it better than a fusion?
